preparing for the Theory Test

Part of the process of obtaining your full driving licence is to pass the Theory Test. you must pass your Theory Test before you can book your Driving Test

The Theory Test is composed of two sections, and both sections have to be passed at the same attempt in order for you to pass the Theory Test. The Test currently costs £23 to book.
The first section is a series of multi-choice questions, the second is a series of Hazard Perception videos.
The pass rate for the Theory Test is about 47%, with Cheltenham Test Centre  reporting a pass rate about 8% higher than the national average. It is sensible to prepare well enough to pass first time if you possibly can, rather than wasting time and money sitting a repeat test.

There are three books that contain the information and knowledge required to be able to pass the the multi-choice section of the Test.
The Theory Test questions will test your knowledge of the contents of three books designed to help you with learning to drive:
  • The Highway Code
  • Driving: The Essential Skills
  • Know your Traffic Signs
(Last time I checked, the three books cost a total of about £23 to buy).
You must answer at least 43 of the 50 questions to pass this section.
Govt information on the multiple choice questions
The Hazard Perception video section.
After the multiple choice questions, y
ou’ll then watch a video explaining the next section, after-which you will be presented with 14 video clips. The clips:
  • feature everyday road scenes
  • contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ - but one of the clips features 2 developing hazards
"You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.
You can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard. To get a high score, click the mouse as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop. You do not lose points if you click and get it wrong. However, you will not score anything if you click continuously or in a pattern."
You must score at least 44 out of 75 to pass this section.
